Cover Reveal & Excerpt & Giveaway: Chaos by Christine O’Neil

Today Christine O’Neil and Entangled Teen Ember are revealing the cover for book 1 in The Kardia Chronicles Series, CHAOS.
Coming out this August!
On to the reveal!

My name is Maggie Raynard. After sixteen years being just plain me, suddenly I can kill people when I lose my temper. Turns out I’m a semi-god, descended from Aphrodite. Sounds cool in theory, but when I accidentally put my ex-boyfriend in a coma, things go downhill pretty fast.

Now some new guy named Mac Finnegan has made it his mission in life to continually piss me off. I’m stuck learning how to use my new powers while also dealing with regular high school problems, and with this—annoying and super-hot—guy all up in my business, I’m about to flip out.
But it gets worse. I just learned there’s this council for semis that wants me dead. They think I’m bad to the bone and when my ex suddenly dies, it’s like everyone is determined to take me out. Mac might turn out to be my only salvation, but he’s got secrets of his own—that may just kill us both.

Exclusive Excerpt

I was done with guys.

Not in that fake, I-say-that-but-deep-down-I-really-want-a-boyfriend kind of way, but in, like, the seriously-I’d-rather-eat-maggoty-cheese kind of way. No relationships. Not for me. Not now and maybe not ever. Who I amwhat I am, and what I’m capable of? Everyone’s better off this way.

“I have to stop at my locker real quick,” I said, veering to the right and cutting through the crush of kids heading straight like wildebeests to a watering hole. Libby followed and then stood by me as I fiddled with the lock.
“What’s that?” She pointed to a white piece of paper sticking out half an inch from one of the slots in the olive metal door.
I tugged the padlock open and flicked the catch with my thumb. “Dunno.” Maybe Bink had left me another note. Bink was my neighbor, bud, and—most days—my ride home. Last time I’d found a note in my locker, it was when his cell phone died and he needed to bail early. I seriously hoped this wasn’t a repeat performance.
I mentally ran down the list of people I could bug for a ride and came up empty. Libby always had to stay after for some activity or another, and I only really had two other people I could call “friends” and neither lived near me. I wrinkled my nose in anticipation of the dirty-sneakers-meets-day-old-bologna smell of a bus filled with kids who’d had last-period gym and opted not to change clothes.
With a sigh, I pulled open the door and the white rectangle floated to the floor.
Libby bent to grab it and read it out loud. “‘Dear Sad and Lonely…'” She trailed off and went quiet
for a few seconds until her peachy complexion went hot pink, and then she gasped. “Oh my God.
Holy… Oh, Mags, you are so not going to like this.”
I snatched the paper from her, trying to ward off the growing pit in my gut.
Dear Sad and Lonely,
Since I can almost guarantee She is about to give you some seriously shite advice like she does every week, let me be the voice of reason. Your boyfriend is just like most high school guys. Cut him some slack and, even better, why not offer to learn how to play some of the games he likes? He’d probably appreciate the effort and might even take you somewhere nice after. If that doesn’t work, sit him down and let him know how you‘re feeling so he can tell you what’s going on with him. Could be that constantly calling the things he likes stupid isn’t the best way to get what you want in this situation, yeah? In any case, don’t let the ramblings of some bitter emo chick who’s probably never had a boyfriend ruin your relationship.
Hope it helps,
He
The shock was too thick to let the anger in right away, but as stunned as I was, I knew exactly who was behind this. There was only one person in the whole school who would use the word “shite.”
Mac Finnegan.
Opinionated, annoying, hot—did I mention annoying?—Mac Finnegan, who had barely given me the time of day since he‘d come to Crestwood High a couple months ago. Mac Finnegan, who thought he was soooo cool with his Irish accent and his mocking smile. Mac Finnegan, who inexplicably made me want to lick him like an ice cream cone and then immediately rinse my mouth out with acid.
How had he discovered my secret? Only Bink and Libby knew I was the girl behind “That’s What She Said,” and I would have bet everything I owned that neither of them would have ratted me out.
Didn’t matter, though. One way or another, he knew. Even worse, he’d chosen to taunt me with it. Bitter emo chick who’s probably never had a boyfriend, indeed. I had a boyfriend once and it hadn’t ended well for either of us. I was in no rush to repeat the experience. Besides, what did this Irish asshat care?
Anger tightened my chest. I could feel the power rising in me, clawing to get out, roaring to be heard. The hair on my arms stood on end as I tried to breathe through it, to let the fury dissipate and flow out of my pores in harmless pings of energy, but it was no use. I pressed a hand to my locker and opened up the tiniest of escape valves, the spout of the teakettle, whistling off a stream of steam. The cheap metal instantly heated against my skin, the door buckling and warping on the spot just beneath my fingertips.
“Uh, Mags—” Libby whispered urgently, but a male voice cut her off.
“How’s it going there, Libby? Maggie.”
I turned around, still trying to catch my breath, and there he was, strolling by, a grin splitting his sinfully beautiful face.
Mac Finnegan, who had decided that being the new kid wasn’t bad enough, so he had to actively go out of his way to make enemies. Mac Finnegan, who wanted to turn my world upside down rather than minding his own business. Mac Finnegan, who didn’t know the meaning of live and let live.
Mac Finnegan, who clearly had no idea who he was fucking with.

Interview ♥ Giveaway with Sheenah Freitas, Author of the Zincian Legend Series

Genre: YA fantasyRelease Date: March 13, 2012
Kaia disappeared for five years. Now she’s back and her planet is on the brink of war.
The new “Numbers” program, created by the Tueors’ leader, tracks and isolates demigods. Kaia’s friend, Catrina, refuses to take part, and that makes her the most dangerous Number of all.
It’s Kaia’s duty to gather and protect the treasures of the gods. But neither the treasures nor Catrina are what they appear to be.
As the day a dire prophesy foresees draws near, will Kaia reverse the gears of fate, or will everything she’s ever loved be burned away by the flames of war?

First and foremost  I am veryyyy happy to have Sheenah, who is a super awesome friend and author here on FireStarBooks today. I had a blast!

INTERVIEW TIME!!

Who is your favorite author and is you writing style similar to theirs?
J.K. Rowling~! I just want to visit Hogwarts forever. I seriously doubt my writing style is similar to hers, but if anyone ever compared my work to hers, I would die happy and demand that quote be engraved on my tombstone.

When naming your characters, do you give any thought to the actual meaning?
I think I give too much thought into the meaning of names. I’m constantly pouring through name meaning websites and books and trying to figure out if it’s a good match or not. And then there are the rare occasions where I just pick a random and just go with it.

How do you get started with writing a story (as in, how do you start developing the story, how do you get inspired for it)?
I think I tackle writing a book like animators tackle making a movie. Or at least, that’s how it feels sometimes. I have my outline and then I start drafting. Sometime during the draft phase, I make storyboards of scenes complete with sketches. To see how my characters look and the blocking involved visually helps me make a scene richer (or at least I hope it does).

What are your current projects?
I’m currently working on the last book in my trilogy. I usually work on one novel project at a time, however, an opportunity came along where I’m also working on an Alice in Wonderlandproject with one of my author buddies. So balancing the two projects has been interesting, to say the least.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
I think it was just a natural evolution of my love of reading. I just started writing something one day with really no reason behind it, but just because I wanted to.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?
Here’s a scene I wrote for the Alice in Wonderlandproject. As a little preface about it, something drastic happened (as they always do) and Alice (her actual name is Arisa) has just discovered that her best friend and crush is on the verge of death after he saved her. And Dinah is the equivalent of the Cheshire cat:
“Cheng?” she whispered.
He slowly opened one eye and tried to move. An agonized groan passed his lips.
“Don’t move yet,” Alice said. “Help is coming.”
“Arisa,” he whispered as he focused on her face.
She traced her finger along his palm, careful not to touch the sides of his hand. “Don’t talk,” Alice said. “Dinah, go tell them!”
The cat nodded and disappeared.
“I’m so sorry, Cheng.”
He coughed. “Everything hurts. Where . . . where’s my father?”
“I’m sure he’s—” She turned toward the bait shop, but it was gone. There was nothing but broken glass and splinters where the building once stood. Her bottom lip quivered.
“He’s what?” Cheng attempted to look up but sucked in a sharp intake of air and let his head fall back.
“Don’t! You have to save your energy. As soon as they come for you, I’ll look for him,” she promised. Tears began rolling down her cheeks.
“Stop that,” Cheng said. He coughed. “Never let the bullies see you cry.” He forced himself to reach up to brush away a tear.
In that moment, Alice was able to see just how bad his condition was. His entire back side was scorched, black, and peeling. Blood seeped from the fissures in his skin. Alice felt her soul twisting inside her body. She knew she needed to be strong for his sake, but the tears kept coming. He had always been the one who knew how to comfort her when she had been hurt by the snide remarks of others who never understood her imagination. Young and old alike just couldn’t believe that there was a world where buildings touched the sky and nobody could talk to plants; whether or not he believed her, she didn’t know nor would she ever know. Even though he had received a bloody nose on more than occasion, he had never allowed anyone to label her as crazy.
“Arisa, come closer,” Cheng wheezed. “I . . . I have something . . . to tell you.”
She wiped away her tears and knelt closer to his face. His voice was getting weaker, but she could do nothing except stay by his side. She placed her palm against his.
“You have to . . . find that place you’re always . . . talking about.”
“I’m staying right here with you—always.”
“I’ve always wanted—” Cheng winced “—to go there with you.”
“We still can! Just hold on!”
“Come closer. Please.”
She knelt down until their noses touched. He leaned up ever so slightly and kissed her. Her eyes grew wide, but she didn’t dare pull away. His lips were cool, but comforting; they felt natural against hers. She leaned into him, allowing him to rest his head back down. After a moment, she pulled away a fraction.
Cheng gave a small grin. “I’ve always wanted to do that my ‘Noble Sand.’ We’ll see each other . . . in the next life. Or maybe that world of yours.”
She shook her head. “You can’t leave me!”
He gave another shallow breath. “I love . . . you . . . Ali—”
His hand dropped away from hers as his eyes became vacant.
“Cheng?” Alice yelled. “Cheng!” She placed her ear near his mouth but couldn’t hear him breathe. “Cheng!” She grabbed his shoulder and shook him. “CHENG!”
She felt fur touch her cheek.
“Alice,” Dinah said gently, “he’s gone.”
She stopped and looked down at the body. “He can’t be gone! He said . . . He said he loved me,” she whimpered.
“He’s always loved you.”

What was the hardest part of writing your book?
Starting it. I thought that writing a first book was hard until I tackled the sequel and then learned that sequels are harder than the first one. There was a lot of decision making. How should I start it? How much should I recap? Does any of the ideas that I have right now even make sense with the first book?!

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
I just adore my readers. Like seriously, they’re just the greatest thing ever. I hope that I’ve entertained them and I hope that they’ll continue to read the stories I’ve written for them.

Fun Questions: 😛
Who is your OTP (from any fandom)?
One OTP that I have that is canon: Usagi and Mamoru from Sailor Moon
One OTP that is NOT canon: Meiling and Syaoran from Cardcaptor Sakura
I have many, many OTPs. :3

Favourite TV show right now?

3. Who is Kuroko Tetsuya?
4. Favourite character from KnB?
5. When was Kuroko born?
6. At what episode (include exact time) did Kuroko first appeared on KnB?
Note: I, Ashley, was being a troll ;P

One thing that you can’t live without?
Anime! I need it in my life!

If the cosplay god can grant you a wish, what will that one wish be? 😛
Wigs. I know nothing about wigs, so I’ve never worn them. I need the cosplay god to like give me an assortment of fantastic wigs with care instructions.

Will you watch Cicak man with me???
Please. We’ll have a party at my house and invite Lynn. 😀

Thank you Sheenah for answering all the questions, even if some were very stupid xD!

Playlist

Hello and thanks for having me on your blog!  ♥
Today, I am pleased to present part of the music playlist for King’s Crusade, Book #2 of the supernatural series Seventeen. I say part, because the actual playlist has 61 songs on it! I’ve chosen my favorites and explained how they relate to the scenes in the book. You have been warned. They are LOUD!

1.    Warrior by Disturbed
To me, this first song defines the protagonist of King’s Crusade. Those lyrics send shivers down my spine and set the pace and flavor for the entire story. I had this on constant replay when I was writing the final battle scene!

2.    Skin to Bone by Linkin Park

The second song comes to you courtesy of Linkin Park and is the tune I had in mind for the prologue, where Dimitri Reznak finds Alexa on the battlefield at Narva.

3.    This is It by Staind

Following on from the prologue, we meet Dimitri Reznak in modern day Egypt, where he makes THE discovery of his immortal lives. This was a great song for this scene.

4.    The Consequence by You Me At Six
This was the song for that opening scene of Chapter Two, when Alexa appears as an adult and jumps off the side of the cliff. The beats seriously rock. The band is British by the way!
5. Hero by Skillet
This song defines the Port Saidfight scene and Alexa’s one-on-one with Boyko Dragov. This is one of my favorite songs of the whole playlist. That chorus is awesome!

6.    Burning Down The House by The Used

I heard this on the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Soundtrack and fell in love with the heavy beats. This is the song for the Mersin Free Zone plot line in Adana, Turkey.

7.    Run by Disturbed

This was the song for the chase scene from the tavern in Istanbulto the church.

8. Our Truth by Lacuna Coil
This is the first song by Lacuna Coil to feature on the King’s Crusade playlist. I discovered this amazing Italian heavy metal band from one of the songs on the Underworld movies soundtracks. Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro are the lead vocalists for the band and I think their voices work very well together to produce a haunting sound. This song was the one I listened to during the Istanbul hotel scene where Alexa confesses the secrets of the Immortals to Jackson.
9.    The Heart of Everything by Within Temptation
Another new group to feature on the King’s Crusade Playlist, this song by Within Temptation defines Francesco Lorenzio’s revelations to Alexa and Jackson in Vatican City.
10. The Path to Decay by Sirenia
Another big favorite from the soundtrack, you could say this song inspired the first part of the Rome chase scene, after the assassination in Vatican City, and the subsequent escape from Vatican Palace. Close your eyes and imagine that scene, starting with their jump from that window!
11. Thick as Thieves by Cavo
Another new band to feature on the playlist, this song by Cavo was perfect for the breaking in scene in London.

12. Sons of Plunder by Disturbed

And here comes the action again! This song is for the first part of the Freemasons’ fight scene.

13. Spellbound by Lacuna Coil

The second song from Lacuna Coil to feature on the playlist for King’s Crusade epitomizes the penthouse scene between Alexa and Jackson.

14. The Truth Beneath the Rose by Within Temptation
The second song to feature on the playlist from Within Temptation, this is from their album The Heart of Everything. This was the perfect tune for the Sumava lab scene, when Alexa uncovers Cavaleti’s plans.
15. The Howling by Within Temptation

More from Within Temptation, this song was for the Permtrain scene leading up to the gun fight in the wagon.

16. I’m Alive by Disturbed

This was the perfect song for the aftermath of the explosion and Alexa waking up in the forest.

17.     Our Solemn Hour by Within Temptation

This is the song for the start of the final fight.

18.     Stand My Ground by Within Temptation

For me, this was the hardest scene to write in the entire book. I agonized for a long time before making the decision that this had to happen. The haunting sounds of this song reflects the heartache at losing someone important.

19.     Whispers in the Dark by Skillet

This is the first song for Alexa’s fall into oblivion and the calling of an ancient voice.

20. Rebirthing by Skillet

The final song of Alexa’s infinite time in darkness and her return to light. The lyrics reflect what she’s going through rather well.

21.     I Don’t Believe in Tomorrow by Lacuna Coil

The Perm Hospitalscene. This song reflects Alexa’s internal conflict and pain.

22.     What Have You Done by Within Temptation, featuring Keith Caputo
This song’s lyrics evoke Alexa’s spiral into hell in the final chapters of the book.
23. Swamped by Lacuna Coil
The penultimate song on the playlist. I had this tune in mind for that Epilogue from the very beginning of the book.
24. Trip the Darkness by Lacuna Coil
The final song for the King’s Crusade playlist was thrown in there for a bit of fun! If this book was ever made into a movie, this song would be my first choice for the end credits. Some of you will recognize this tune from one of the Underworld movies soundtrack.
I hope you’ve enjoyed the rather extensive playlist for the second novel in Seventeen. That was a fabulous 61 songs in total, which will all feature on my website with a weekly release under News starting May 7. I am pleased to announce that the playlist for Book Three is completed and will feature on the website next year. It’s nice and sweet, with puppies, kittens, and unicorns…I’m kidding, obviously…
Happy reading, writing, and blogging all!

Book Description:
A half breed immortal. An international manhunt. A race against time to stop a terrifying plot that threatens to kill millions. The gripping, action-packed debut novel by AD Starrling and the first in the supernatural thriller series Seventeen.

‘My name is Lucas Soul.
Today, I died again.
This is my fifteenth death in the last four hundred and fifty years.’

The Crovirs and the Bastians. Two races of immortals who have lived side by side with humans for millennia and been engaged in a bloody war since the very dawn of their existence. With the capacity to survive up to sixteen deaths, it was not until the late fourteenth century that they reached an uneasy truce, following a deadly plague that wiped out more than half of their numbers and made the majority of survivors infertile.

Soul is an outcast of both immortal societies. Born of a Bastian mother and a Crovir father, a half breed whose very existence is abhorred by the two races, he spends the first three hundred and fifty years of his life being chased and killed by the Hunters.

One fall night in Boston, the Hunt starts again, resulting in Soul’s fifteenth death and triggering a chain of events that sends him on the run with Reid Hasley, a former US Marine and his human business partner of ten years. When a lead takes them to Washington DC and a biotechnology company with affiliations to the Crovirs, they cross the Atlantic to Europe, on the trail of a French scientist whose research seems intrinsically linked to the reason why the Hunters are after Soul again.

From Paris to Prague, their search for answers will lead them deep into the immortal societies and bring them face to face with someone from Soul’s past. Shocking secrets are uncovered and fresh allies come to the fore as they attempt to put a stop to a new and terrifying threat to both immortals and humans.

Time is running out for Soul. Can he get to the truth before his seventeenth death, protect the ones he loves and prevent another immortal war?
